Can of worms

Sorry for being so graphic, but that is exactly where I am, figuratively speaking.

For the past two years (wow, it is really been two years already) I have been teaching crochet classes and writing patterns to use in classes only. I would design anything that my students would like to make or learn to make – ear flap hats, brim hats, mittens, socks, blankets etc.  Many of the patterns evolved from there.

I had some down time reticently (yeap, me, down time, unheard of!), so I decided to research more on how to self publish my patterns, what it involves and what steps needs to be taken. You have no idea how much work goes into it until you start self publishing. (Getting published in a magazine is a lot of work too, just different type of work – that’s a different topic).  A short list in no particular order goes like this: testing, tech editing, and figuring out copyright and licensing information. I had great experience working with testers through Ravelry, and an amazing experience with tech editors, they did wonders for my patterns and I learned a lot.

Now I am working on figuring out copyright and licensing.  That is a can of worms I was referring to.  There is so much information to sift through that my head is about to explode.  I should have majored in law, lol.  With a magic of Ravelry (did I mention that I love Ravelry?), I learned a difference between the copyright and licensing.  Apparently there is a lot of misconception that surrounds copyrighting and what it covers, and what is protected by a license.   Now I am working on wording mine.  I would like to help fellow crafters to create items to sell using my patterns.  I will probably use cottage license and that is a completely different can.
