Square Baby Blanket

This is an easy blanket to make.  Suitable for beginner.  The pattern is very basic and could be your first project.  First two rows might be a bit challenging at first, but after that it’s a breeze.

The blankets starts at the middle with just few stitches, increases are made at corners and the blanket “grows”.
It can be made in any yarn and any gauge.  The blanket can be made to any size, stop when you like, or work until you run out of yarn or get bored with it.

Square Baby Blanket

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn, shown in Cotton Tots.
Hook:  US Size H (5mm)

Altimatelly any yarn can be used, just select a hook to match it.

4 stitch markers

Finished Size of the blanket shown is approximately 32″ by 32″ after 27 rows, including the edging.

Gauge: not very important for this project

Abbreviations
ch- chain
dc – double crochet
sl st- Slip Stitch

Notes: The pattern can be worked in variegated yarn, striped in several different colors.  The following sequence used for the blanket shown: 5 rounds multicolored,  2 rounds yellow,  5 rounds multicolored,  2 rounds green,  5 rounds multicolored,  2 rounds yellow,  5 rounds multicolored,  1 round shell stitch in green.

Blanket:

Chain 4, sl st into the first chain made to for a ring, or used the adjustable ring.

Rnd 1: Ch2 (counts as dc), in the ring work: dc, ch1, [3 dc, ch 1] 3 times, dc, sl st to top of ch2 – 16 sts. Place markers in ch-a spaces and move them up with every row.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc in next st, [in next ch-1 sp work (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc), dc in next 3 sts] repeat 3 times, in next ch-1 sp work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), dc in next st, sl st to top of ch-2 – 32 sts.

Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in next 3 sts, [in next ch-1 sp work (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc), dc in next 7 sts] repeat 3 times, in next ch-1 sp work (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc), dc in next 3 sts, sl st to top of ch-2 – 48 sts.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in each st to next M, [in next ch-1 sp work(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), dc in each st to next M] 3 times, in next ch-1 sp work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), dc in remaining sts, sl st to top of ch-2 – 64 sts.

Repeat last rnd until desired size.

Suggested border:

Ch 1, [skip next 2 st, 5 dc in the next st, skip next 2 st, sl st in next st] around.
